In May 2024 Carmel attended a songwriters retreat in Kinglake, Victoria where she co-wrote a number of songs. Carmel came together with Owen Smith, Gavin Brown and Lachlan Bryan to write Heartwood. Earlier this year Carmel decided to move on after 20 years of running a music club to further pursue her writing and performing. Heartwood is about leaving behind something you've done for many years and starting a journey of branching out to new beginnings.

Lyrics

HEARTWOOD
It was fresh it was new and somehow it grew into something I could believe in
We rise with the sun to get the job done they said that we were dreaming

Seasons change and I changed a little bit too
No-one’s to blame but my heart has found a way through
Chorus
It grows on its own you can’t hurry it
I stood back and encouraged it
Now I’m stripping the bark, can’t wait to start
I’m building my home from the heartwood

Verse: Time came to cut out the deadwood
And the briar has grown too long
It blocked out the sky and started to die
Had to act before it was gone

Instrumental ………. I changed a little bit too
Instrumental…….. My heart has found a way ……..it’s found a way………. found a way
through

Chorus
It grows on its own you can’t hurry it
I stood back and encouraged it
Now I’m stripping the bark, can’t wait to start
I’m building my home from the heartwood
It grows on its own you can’t hurry it
I stood back and encouraged it
Now I’m stripping the bark, can’t wait to start
I’m building my home from the heartwood
Now I’m stripping the bark, can’t wait to start
I’m building my home from the heartwood
Now I’m stripping the bark, can’t wait to start
I’m building my home from the heartwood
