The Avon Vally was the first inland area in Western Australia settled for farming. The river runs through the old wheatbelt towns of Toodyay, Northam, York, Beverley, Brookton and Pingelly. A feature of the area is the powder wandoo or white gums. In springtime there is a profuse array of wildflowers.
